a racoon.

it was freezing cold here in Winterpeg this week. so i bundled up, parked my car, and braced myself for 5000 block walk from my car to work (the distance increases with every telling of the tale). i talked to guy standing at one corner about how cold his little dog looked, the dog was shivering, and then kept walking. i took shortcuts if i could, hopping parking fences, cutting through parking lots and backlanes. i walked into my building and i could feel my bangs were frosty, and my scarf was white with frost. my eyes felt a little moist. i ran into a colleague and she smiled, said good morning, hoped on the elevator with me and mentioned i had some mascara on the lid of my left eye. i wiped it off and said "there will probably be more, i'll just wait until i reach my office". she smiled. we reached the 8th floor, starting walking down the hallway to our offices and ran into one of the doctors she works with (not the nicest guy you'll meet). he looked at us and smiled, walked ahead of us, and kept looking back smiling, almost laughing. this to me was odd behavior in hindsight. we parted ways as i walked into my office. i removed my coat, my scarf, my tuque (sp?)and settled down for work. as i did so, i caught a glimpse of myself in a little rearview mirror i have on my desk. ACK, i couldn't believe my eyes (literally)! i looked like tammy faye baker(no offence, i quite like the lady) after she has cried. i had mascara all around my eyes! it was hilarious! it was much more than just a little on the lid of my left eye. both eyes were black around. racoon eyes, one might say.
